Anticholinergic Medications

You have been prescribed the following medication to relax the bladder:

GENERIC

  • Oxybutynin IR (Ditropan)

COMMERCIAL

  • Oxybutynin ER (Ditropan XL)
  • Oxybutynin TTS (Oxytrol Patch)
  • Tolterodine (Detrol LA)
  • Trospium Chloride (Sanctura)
  • Solifenacin (Vesicare)
  • Darifenacin (Enablex)

The class of medication is called the “Anticholinergic Medications”.

These medications cannot be used in people with “closed angle glaucoma”. If you think you may have this diagnosis please call your ophthalmologist before starting the medication. If you have been diagnosed with “slow intestines” you should speak with your GI doctor prior to using it. If you have renal failure, your nephrologist should help with the dosing. It is a good idea with any medication to have your pharmacist double check for interactions with other medications you are on. Usually, however, these medications are well tolerated and safe without major side effects. The most common complaints we hear are dry mouth, headache, constipation, rash from the patch, and, in the elderly, mental status changes.

Different insurance plans cover different medications. If you find your co-pay is too high to use the medication that was recommended, please call your insurance company to find out which one of the above medications they will pay for. Then call our office at 262-3341 to let us know which one you have chosen. We will need the name and number of your pharmacy to call in the alternative.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
The Urologic Institute of Northeastern New York
