Discharge GSV Ablation

POST-PROCEDURE INSTRUCTIONS: SAPHENOUS VEIN LASER ABLATION

You have just had a procedure to treat the varicose veins in your legs.  A laser fiber was placed into the greater Saphenous vein in order to prevent blood flow in this vein.  This will reduce the amount of blood flowing into the varicose veins, which will reduce the pain, discomfort, and swelling you have experienced.

  1. You will have a compression stocking on when you leave the office. Wear your stocking for the first 24 hours after your procedure and then each day when you are awake for a month.  You may take it off to sleep and shower.  You may also have an Ace bandage on over your stocking.  Keep the Ace wrap on for 24 hrs.

  2. You will have a small dressing which should stay on until your first shower.  No additional dressing is needed after that.

  3. You may have some discomfort following your procedure. Some people find it helpful to take a few days off of work, although we expect you to be able to resume all your pre-procedure activities quite rapidly.  Take your prescribed medicine OR ibuprofen for the first few days.  If you are having extreme discomfort, bleeding or fever; notify the office immediately by calling (518) 262-5149.  After hours, call (518) 262-3125 and ask to speak with the interventional radiologist on call.

  4. We would like you to continue to keep moving and maintain a normal level of activity. Walking twice daily for 20 minutes is encouraged and promotes speedy healing.

  5. If you have any questions, please call us at (518) 262-5149.  After hours, you can call (518) 262-3125 and ask to speak with the interventional radiologist on call.
