  Preparing for Your PET/CT Scan

The accuracy of the scan depends on your body's metabolic activity, which is controlled by the factors below. It is very important that you follow all these instructions:

  • Nothing to eat or drink (except water) for AT LEAST eight hours before your scan. If you have an afternoon appointment (I.E. after 1 pm or later), you may have a light breakfast EARLY in the morning (avoid caffeine and sugar), but only water and medications may be taken within 8 hours of the scan.

  • IF YOU ARE A DIABETIC, you may have a small, light breakfast (avoid sweets, sugar and caffeine) six hours prior to the scheduled scan times, as well as your regular dose of diabetic drugs (insulin, glucophage, etc.). You should have an afternoon appointment. If you are a brittle diabetic, and can not maintain glucose levels below 200, or have problems with hypoglycemia, please call ImageCare for special instructions.

  • Do NOT chew gum, nicorette gum, candy (including mints), or cough drops for AT LEAST 6 hours before your scan.

  • You may take prescribed medications with water. If any of your medications must be taken with food, ask your doctor whether you should take your morning dose, or take it later in the day, or take it without food the day of your exam.

  • Unless you are on fluid restrictions for other reasons, drink at least 64 ounces of fluids the day before your exam, including two 8-ounce glasses of water the night before your scan. Continue drinking water the day of your exam to prevent dehydration.

  • DO NOT PERFORM ANY STRENUOUS OR VIGOROUS ACTIVITY (e.g. aerobics, jogging) for at least 24 hours prior to the scan.

  • Sedation is rarely needed; however, if you are claustrophobic or tend to be extremely nervous and fidgety, consult your doctor about the advisability of taking a tranquilizer before coming to PET/CT Imaging. If you do require sedation, arrange to have someone drive you to and from the Center.
