Frequently asked Questions About Breast Imaging
What is digital mammography?
Digital mammography is the combination of two technologies: conventional x-rays and computers, much like todays' digital cameras. With digital mammography the image is immediately available for the technologist to review and is then transferred to a computer as opposed to traditional x-ray film. The computer enables our
Radiologists to enhance the image's diagnostic quality to better evaluate any suspicious areas.
What is the softer mammography?
Our facilities provide every woman with their own personal "MammoPad". This is a soft, foam pad that creates a cushion between you and the mammo machine so you can relax knowing your exam will be warm and comfortable. ImageCare is proud to be a certified Softer Mammogram Provider.
Why the compression?
The compression is necessary to produce the quality images you would want in order for the radiologist to make an accurate diagnosis. It separates breast tissue, allowing optimal evaluation of lesions that might be obscured by other tissue. It prevents motion and increases detail by bringing the breast as close as possible to the receptor.
At what age can I start having my mammogram?
Most doctors recommend your first mammogram between the ages of 35-40. This is called your baseline mammogram. After age 40 the ACS (American Cancer Society) recommends that women have a mammogram yearly.
When will I receive my results?
Soon after your exam you will receive a letter with your mammogram results. Your provider will receive the medical report. From time to time, some patient's may be called back for additional imaging. ImageCare will contact you to schedule that appointment. Patient's that return for additional imaging will be given their results at that appointment.
