Shoulder Impingement and Physical Therapy |
|
Shoulder pain due to impingement, the painful entrapment of the supraspinatus tendon, subacromial/subdeltoid bursa, and/or biceps tendon between the humeral head and coracoacromial arch, is commonly treated by a physical therapist. Early recognition and referral to physical therapy may ease symptoms and decrease long term problems. Impingement may be due to a structural anomaly, repetitive use, a disease process such as RA, or from poor posture. Shoulder impingement may lead to inflammation of the involved tendons and each episode of tendinitis further weakens the tendons. Patients will frequently report increased pain with overhead activities in particular, but may also note pain when sleeping on the affected side, performing activities away from the body, or with lifting. Physical therapy is a beneficial intervention in the event of repetitive use injuries, disease processes, and poor posture. Early treatment in physical therapy with proper education about how the shoulder functions and instruction in an appropriate exercise program is crucial to prevent further, more serious problems. Treatment may also include the use of manual therapies, postural re-education, ultrasound, iontophoresis, and other modalities to improve range of motion, decrease pain and inflammation, and for functional restoration. |
