Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thin band of tough tissue supporting the arch of the foot. Early treatment of plantar fasciitis leads to more favorable results with earlier symptom resolution. Physical therapy is a good initial treatment to provide relief of symptoms. Patients typically present with a complaint of increased heel pain first thing in the morning and after prolonged sitting. In more severe cases, pain may be present with prolonged standing and walking, and in the most severe cases, worsens as the day progresses. Potential causes of plantar fasciitis include: over stressing the arch, sudden increase in activity, improper footwear, calf tightness, and weakness of the foot and ankle. Typically, these causes occur in combination with significant pes cavus or planus increasing the risk. |

Physical therapy treatment can provide early pain relief while decreasing inflammation. Treatment may include: phonophoresis or iontophoresis, soft tissue mobilization, stretching, and strengthening. The use of arch supports, taping of the plantar fascia, and a night splint may also be beneficial in managing plantar fasciitis. |
