The term “neck strain” is used to describe an injury to the muscles and/or ligament of the neck. The complex anatomy of the cervical region of the spine (neck) allows you to hold your head upright, as well as move it in many directions. The muscles closest to the vertebrae (neck bones) help provide stability to the spine. The muscles located further from the spine allow for mobility. The ligaments are like strong ropes that connect the bones and provide for stability. Neck strains frequently occur as a result of motor vehicle accidents, during sporting activities, or as a result of repetitive stresses. In some cases the neck strain occurs as a result of a single activity, but may also occur as a result of repetitive tasks over time. With a neck strain, there is usually tenderness or pain around the muscles or ligaments that are injured. The affected muscles may also tighten up to protect the injured area, causing increased pain and decreased ability to move the head. Patients with a neck strain do not usually complain of the following problems: change in bowel or bladder function, weakness in their arm muscles, pain and numbness that travels down either arm, increased pain with coughing or sneezing, pain associated with weight loss or fevers, and/or pain that consistently wakes them up at night. Treatment of a neck strain is often facilitated by physical therapy. Physical therapy may include: soft tissue mobilization, postural education, stretches, exercises, activity modification, and/or modalities such as electrical stimulation, ultrasound, heat, and or ice. |
