UTERINE FIBROID EMBOLIZATION (UFE) – Experience
This is an important question that any patient should ask of their physician when considering the UFE procedure. Our clinical team at Interventional Care has one of the most well-established UFE practices in the entire country. Dr. Gary Siskin was one of the first physicians in the country to develop a clinically-based UFE practice and consistently has one of the highest-volume practices for this procedure in the United States. He has been invited to speak on this procedure at medical meetings and conferences over the past several years and has published several articles on UFE. Recently, Dr. Siskin has contributed chapters in two textbooks on the UFE procedure and has edited an issue of Techniques in Vascular and Interventional Radiology on Women’s Interventions.
He is presently working on a textbook highlighting the role of Interventional Radiology in Women’s Health. Our practice has participated in all clinical trials evaluating embolic agents for use during UFE procedures and was designated as a core site in the Fibroid Registry, a study sponsored by the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Research and Education Foundation (CIRREF) and the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) in cooperation with the Duke Clinical Research Institute. As a result, all of our physicians and nurse practitioners have gained significant experience with the UFE procedure and can confidently offer this procedure to patients with symptomatic uterine fibroids.
The importance of experience extends beyond the physician performing the procedure. As a result of being involved with thousands of these procedure, the technologist and nursing staff working as part of our clinical team, has gained the expertise required to take the patient through the pre-procedure evaluation, the procedure, the recovery, and the post-procedure follow-up visits. Our staff knows what to expect with this procedure and as a result, can contribute significantly to the experience of our patients as they pass through our practice.
