Discharge Phlebectomy

POST-PROCEDURE INSTRUCTIONS: PHLEBECTOMY

You have just undergone a procedure to remove small varicose veins from your legs.  During this procedure, a small incision was made in the leg and the vein was removed.

  1. You will have a compression stocking on when you leave the office. Wear your stocking for the first 24 hours after your procedure and then each day when you are awake for a month.  You may take it off to sleep and shower.

  2. You will have a small dressing at the insertion site with steri-strips in place.  You may remove the dressing at your first shower.  Leave the steri-strips in place. The steri-strips may begin to come loose after 5-7 days.  If they begin to curl and come off, you may take them off.

  3. You may have some discomfort following your procedure. Some people find it helpful to take a day or two off of work, although we expect you to be able to resume all your pre-procedure activities (including work) the following day, if necessary. If you are having extreme discomfort, bleeding or fever; call the office immediately at (518) 262-5149.  After hours, call (518) 262-3125 and ask to speak with the interventional radiologist on call.

  4. We would like you to continue to keep moving and maintain a normal level of activity. Walking twice daily for 20 minutes is encouraged and promotes speedy healing.

  5. Please feel free to call the office at (518)-262-5149 if you have any questions. After hours, call (518) 262-3125 and ask to speak with the interventional radiologist on call.
