Healthy Tips to Get You through Summer Parties and Vacations
By Sonshine Fitness of WORxKOUT, the fitness center at Community Care Physicians, PC
So, you’ve taken the first step. You’ve made a commitment to improve your health and change your lifestyle. You’ve decided to eat right, begin exercising, and make different day-to-day choices. Then, a potential set back. You get invited to cousin Billy’s barbeque fully-equipped with Grandma’s macaroni salad, potato salad and delicious pies.
But don’t fret. These summer events don’t have to sidetrack your progress. Whether it’s a family party, an office gathering or a summer Bar-B-Q, you can still follow a healthy eating plan. Delicious party foods can fit right in with your new lifestyle. Eating healthy is about making better food choices—and allows you the occasional indulgences!
Here are six simple strategies to help you stay on track:
- Eat Before You Go. If you arrive at a party starving, everything will look and smell delicious, leaving you vulnerable to making unhealthy choices. If you eat a healthy meal or snack beforehand, you'll be able to make better decisions about what you eat at the party, including which items you truly want to splurge on.
- Meet and Greet. Don't station yourself by the buffet table. Mingle! Parties are a great time to catch up with old friends or make new ones.
- Bring a Dish to Share. Chances are your host will appreciate it if you bring a delicious dish for everyone to enjoy. This is your chance to make something healthy and make sure there will be something at the party you can eat.
- Become More Knowledgeable. Knowledge is power, after all. Make sure you fully understand the healthy eating principles — choosing delicious, fiber-rich, nutrient-dense foods that satisfy your appetite while keeping cravings at bay — so that you can make the right choices. The trainers of Sonshine Fitness in Community Care Workout can provide you with programs that will teach you all of these principles as a way to better health and weight loss.
- Enjoy an Indulgence. A commitment to a healthy lifestyle is about making overall good choices while allowing some sinful indulgences, particularly at this time of year when summer vacations and opportunities to gather with friends and family are all around us! Decide which of those unhealthy foods — like Grandma's chocolate cream pie — are really worth the splurge. Then, eat a little of those in addition to the healthy foods you're accustomed to eating. Try to stick to healthy eating when you know you have a special event coming up, whether it’s a romantic dinner or a family barbeque. Plan ahead and then enjoy a special and not so healthy (but delicious) treat!
