Health News - Do you really need a physical every year?

Dr. Samantha Ludwig discusses the importance of annual physicals on FOX 23 News' Ask The Doctor.

Why do I need a physical every year?

Generally people think you visit a doctor only when you are sick. However, primary care physicians are here for much more than that. The family physicians at Latham Medical Group perform physical examinations for patients of all ages.

A physical is focused on preventative medicine or things we can do ahead of time before you have a problem.

Your primary care doctor at Latham Medical Group uses this time during your physical to review your entire medical and family history to make sure there aren't any changes over the last year. We make sure your immunizations are up to date and any necessary blood work completed. Coming in for a physical exam also allows for a chance to talk about quitting smoking, losing weight and other healthy lifestyle recommendations. We make sure that you are up to date with other tests, like colonoscopy, mammogram, and pap smears. Even if you do not have any current health concerns, regular physicals ensure you remain healthy and stay on top of any issues that do arise before they become serious health concerns.

Physicals are performed by your primary care provider. Your primary care provider at Latham Medical Group is your personal care physician who provides preventive and diagnostic services, as well as education on management of illnesses, healthy behaviors and coordination of specialty services. Look at your primary care physician as your partner in your health. They are the first stop to getting healthy and staying healthy.

Your visit to your primary care doctor for annual physicals gives you a chance to discuss any issues or concerns you have one-on-one with your provider. It's uninterrupted time completely dedicated to you. Take advantage of this time with your doctor so you can maintain good health for you and your family.
